MAURITIUS - should I be proud of?

As some people may not know, I'm the chinese guy from Mauritius! Yeah quite rare to see chinese Mauritian among Malaysians, I know!

MAURITIUS FLAG

Well recently it was the Independance Day of our country, on the 12th March! Nothing special happened to us, Mauritians, here on that day. It was just a normal day like any other.

Since I'm here by myself all alone from a far distant country, it's my first time that during our Independance Day, nothing special happens! Normally we do celebrate at school with our little flag of Mauritius and wave it and rejoice, "Yippepee!!! Yeahhh!!!" But since I'm here, I sometimes I ask myself, should I be proud to be Mauritian?

Location of Mauritius

This question resounds in my head because my country status is becoming very bad recently. Sometimes I don't feel proud of what's happpening to my small island! Our economy has decreased a lot and the salary in Mauritius is quite low compared to here and Singapore. Mauritius used to be a peaceful country, but now have lots of crime, corruption, racism where I can see in the online newspaper and hear on the online radio. How far shall this continue? What is happening to my little island?

Before I left Mauritius to here, I've already put in my mind that I'll return back after I'll graduate to work. The purpose for me to work back home is to be able to help the people, the younger ones especially because they hold the future of tomorrow. I want to help to raise new potiential leaders that can take on the country! This is the reason why I wanted to study psychology! This is my dream, my purpose and my life!

We, Mauritians of UCSI, have met the High Comissioner of our country. He's a funny guy to make typically Mauritian jokes! It has been quite a long time that I didn't hear those funny jokes typically Mauritian! :p Nobody will understand, expect us Mauritians! :p hahaha So we met him and discussed of some problems we faced and told us how he can help and support us during our stay in Malaysia. He gave us the Prime Mininster(PM)'s letter for the Independence Day. I hate this PM! He's the one who make our country into a disaster and that's why I'm not proud of my country where I should be! Again in his letter, talking about non-sense and all the "promises" so that we become better citizens!

To be proud of it, I will be, but once we are moving forward and not backwards, higher and not deeper, stronger and not weaker. I should be proud where I put my country my purpose, to be a better place! :)
